To be or not to be a Footie fan?

Even if you're not a footie fan, this summer's World Cup can kick off some memorable lessons.
Do you know Zakumi? ?? Zakumi (born 16 June 1994 (1994-06-16) (age 15)) is the Official Mascot for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He is an anthropomorphised leopard with green hair, presented on 22 September 2008. His name comes from "ZA", the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for South Africa, and "kumi", a word that means ten in various African languages.
The green and yellow (gold) colours of the character match the colours used in South African sport uniforms and can also be seen in the South Africa national football team's kit.

Are you a Footie fan? I consider myself a footie fan!!!!!!but if you don't, may be your pupils yes. Anyway do you know that the World Cup is a wonderful event to teach them countries, nationalities, traditions, history , vocabulary, art design, music and more ?

We, as "teachers", can use the tournament as a vehicle to drive pupils' learning in a wide range of curriculum areas.
Surfing the web I found you wonderful sites to learn about one of the most beautiful sports in the world "football".

Football

Are you a footie fan?

When and where exactly did football start? it is a question that has no precise answer to it. You can easily say that this popular game has been played for more than three thousand years. The nativity of modern-day soccer must be credited to Britain. It was also known as the association football, with Scotland and England being the co-founders of the systematic game of soccer.

Modern History of Soccer: 18th Century onwards

In 1815, a major development took place that made soccer popular in Universities, Colleges and Schools. The popular English School and Eton College came forth with a set of rules, known as the Cambridge Rules. Football was segregated into two groups; some colleges and schools opted for Rugby rules that allowed tripping, shin kicking and also carrying the ball. These rules were exclusively prohibited as per the Cambridge rules.

The history of modern-day soccer was established in 1863. In October 1863, eleven representatives from London clubs and schools met at the Freemasons Tavern to set up common fundamental rules to control the matches amongst themselves.
Firmly establishing the foundation of soccer in 1869, the Football Association strictly banned any kind of handling of the ball. Soccers popularity spread rapidly during the 1800s as British sailors, traders and soldiers introduced the sport to different parts of the globe.

Italians, Austrians and Germans drew to Europe, while Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil adopted the sport in South America. FIFA was established in the year 1904 and by early 1930s, different leagues were operating from various countries. FIFA is credited with organizing the first world cup in Uruguay. The history of soccer is rich with events, development and its growing craze all over the world. You will find yourself amazed as you learn about different times of this wonderful sport that has held our awe and admiration for over 3000 years.

Mother's day is coming

On Mother's day , your pupils will want to make a card or something special, may be you can get some ideas from here Mother's day crafts

The Story of Mother's Day

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.
During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday".
Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.
During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers.
A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration.
People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.
In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

Art Attack

If you have art as a subject to teach and you are lack of ideas for your classes or as parents you want totry some of these activities you have a wonderful site here based on the Disney Channel pregramme. Art attack

It might surprise you to know that presenter Neil Buchanan isn't a qualified artist - he's a musician!

"Before I appeared on television, I was in a rock band called Marseille. We made two albums and five or six singles, on vinyl, so you can tell how long ago it was!", he explains. "Mums and Dads might remember the band - or even have the songs somewhere!"

Neil grew up in Aintree, Liverpool. "I've enjoyed art since I was very young. One day I thought that I'd make quite a good artist, so I enrolled at Liverpool Art College. They told me that they thought I wasn't good enough, so I walked out and have never looked back", he remembers.

Neil has presented Art Attack since it began on CiTV an amazing twelve years ago. "Those early programmes are still being shown in some countries, and it's rather embarrassing to look back at the haircut I had at the time. I was recently asked if I had been wearing a wig! But I don't think it looked that bad", he laughs!
